The 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments served for the next two decades. helping to open up and keep safe passage for settlers headed west to Texas. New Mexico. Arizona. Colorado. Montana. and the Dakotas. They built roads and forts. strung telegraph wires. and protected settlers. railroad builders and stage coaches. They fought against various Indian tribes. such as the Cheyenne. Arapahoe. Kiowa. Comanche. and Apache. The Plains Indians called them Buffalo Soldiers. a name the Black men wore proudly. as evidence of their proud spirit like the sacred buffalo.
