From All Movie Guide It is hard to deny that Muhammad Ali is well cast as 'himself' in this colorful biopic. The fact that Ali cant act his way out of a wet paper bag is hardly important; audiences came to see their hero in action in the boxing ring. and they werent disappointed. The rambling. episodic screenplay covers Alis life from his 'Cassius Clay' days to the celebrated Ali/George Foreman bout. An inordinate amount of screen time is given over to Alis conversion to Islam and his potentially career-breaking decision not to serve in the Army. Ernest Borgnine does his usual as Alis first trainer Angelo Dundee. while Roger E. Mosley. cast as Sonny Liston. exhibits more star power than the real Liston and Ali combined! The Greatest was the final directorial effort from the late Tom Gries. Hal Erickson
