Thomas Blackshear was born on November 14, 1955, in Waco Texas but he grew up in Atlanta Georgia. He attended and graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago in 1977. His first Ebony Visions figurine is The Storyteller; which is truly a masterpiece. Thomas Blackshear said that his Ebony Visions figurine collections are designed to portray a positive image of the black culture.
His style of work has been described as Afro-Nouveau because of its uniqueness and representation of African American culture.
